What Is Posture?
According to the Postural Restoration Institute (PRI), as described by its founder Ron Hruska, posture is not simply the way we stand or sit. Rather, posture reflects how the body's systems are organized and function together at any given moment.
According to PRI, the muscular system, respiratory system, balance system, visual system, nervous system, masticatory system, and other body systems constantly interact with one another. A change in one system influences the others. Therefore, posture is considered the result of the interaction among all of these systems, rather than merely the position of the spine or pelvis.
- Posture Is a Reflection of the Body's Functional Patterns
Ron Hruska describes posture as:
"Reflection of the position of many systems that are regulated, determined and created through limited functional patterns."
In other words, posture itself is not the problem; it is a reflection of how the body organizes itself to cope with functional limitations.
For example:
An inefficient breathing pattern Muscular imbalances Restricted joint mobility Adaptations following pain or injury
These factors may lead to repetitive movement patterns that, over time, become visible in the way a person stands, walks, and moves.
- Posture Is the Sum of the Postures of All Body Systems
As Hruska states:
"Body posture is really the aggregate of all your system postures."
According to PRI, every body system has its own internal "posture" or organization, including:
The respiratory system The rib cage The pelvis The spine The visual system The vestibular (balance) system The masticatory (jaw) system
The posture we observe externally is therefore the combined expression of the functional organization of all these systems.
- The Human Body Is Naturally Asymmetrical
One of the fundamental principles of PRI is that the human body is anatomically asymmetrical.
For example:
The liver is primarily located on the right side. The heart is positioned predominantly on the left side. The right lung has three lobes, whereas the left lung has two. The right hemidiaphragm is generally larger and has a mechanical advantage due to the support provided by the liver. The position of the internal organs influences the shape of the rib cage and breathing mechanics.
According to PRI, these anatomical asymmetries create a natural tendency for the body to rely more heavily on certain right-sided movement strategies.
It is important to note: While these anatomical asymmetries are well established in anatomical research, the conclusion that they lead to the specific movement patterns and compensatory strategies described by PRI is part of the PRI theoretical model and has not yet been fully established by scientific evidence.
Right Lateralization
Within PRI, the term Right Lateralization describes a state in which the body becomes dependent on right-sided movement strategies and has difficulty transitioning efficiently to left-sided movement patterns.
This does not simply mean that the body leans to the right. Rather, it refers to functional difficulty with:
Shifting weight onto the left leg Rotating the body to the left Expanding both sides of the rib cage evenly during breathing Effectively recruiting specific muscles on the left side
According to PRI, when the body cannot efficiently alternate between right- and left-sided movement strategies as movement demands change, compensatory patterns may develop, potentially increasing mechanical stress on tissues and, in some cases, contributing to pain.
